Glass Tiffany Studios, New York City, 1902–32 (59-004, 59-006)

These iridescent glass tiles, c. 1915, are just a few of the more than 250 that lined the skylight of the Daffodil Terrace at Louis Comfort Tiffany’s s Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. In keeping with Tiffany’s unique and dramatic style, a pear tree was planted in the center of the terrace and grew up through the ten-foot-square skylight. The delicate motif on the tiles mirrored the actual branches and leaves in a brilliant mosaic—art at one with the organic.
